This week, Lenspeed is adding a new category – Bangerwatch! I’ll be commenting about old cars I find that caught my eye, and that you should have a look at too because, well, they’re cool.
And I don’t have to say too that older cars are generally easier on the wallet, more involving to drive and just more interesting.
Today my accomplice and I spotted a sweet-looking 1989 Accord, with a chiselled body that immediately caught our eyes when we trawled through the “>10 year old cars” section.
Sure this particularly example doesn’t quite have the right rims (bordering on ghastly, actually) and it seems to sit a tad too high on the road. But for S$18,800, you are doing pretty well to lose ~$3-4k per year in depreciation in this climate (talking about Singapore, of course!)
The Accord of this vintage had an exterior designed by Toshi Oshika, although this particular version didn’t have the pop-up headlights anymore, presumably done away like most other old cars (a shame!). It was very well-received and today, it still looks rather fresh – giving off that hewn-from-metal look that is very agreeable indeed.
This 1.6-litre engine produced 88bhp when new, so you will get a discount of a few horses off that today. But if experience is any indication, an old Honda will exceed what you expect from the paper stats. It’s a big plus for us that this is a manual, too.
This was also the first Honda to feature double-wishbone suspension front and rear, which is more expensive than the ubiquitous MacPherson setups of its competitors of the time and presumably gives better handling.
The first thing that struck me about the interior was the lowly-set dashboard which features right up to modern Hondas. It is one Honda quirk that I absolutely treasure because of the great visibility it gives from the perfect driving position. That steering wheel looks thin enough to grip hard too – modern wheels are just too fat nowadays, I wonder why?
I like this, very much. If I knew my future was set in Singapore, I would be visiting this first thing on Sunday morning…
I hope you enjoy my first Bangerwatch post. I’ve learnt about this car so much just writing this – a great excuse to get off uni work to write more bangerwatch posts…
